Seit Ende der 70er Jahre schrieb Rheinberger auch regelmäßig Orgelwerke, obwohl er selbst auf Grund der schweren Erkrankung seiner rechten Hand das Instrument nicht mehr öffentlich spielen konnte. Seine 5. Orgelsonate entstand 1878 und es folgten von da an fast jährlich eine Sonate und Konzert für dieses Instrument, sowie die beiden größere Sammlungen kleinerer Kompositionen, ohne dass man eine konkrete Veranlassung für diese Kompositionen benennen könnte.
