Mit den Sonaten Nr. zwei bis vier hat Rheinberger einen Sonatentypus entwickelt, der zwar nach wie vor stark kontrapunktisch bestimmt, aber nicht mehr von kontrapunktischen Kunststücken dominiert ist. In Anlehnung an Mendelssohn erhält jeder Satz sein eigenes Gewicht, wobei auch das lyrische Moment nicht zu kurz kommt, und werden die Sätze andererseits durch Motivanklänge und Themenübernahmen eng miteinander verknüpft.
